As a teacher I know there is never an end to learning. Whether it's something you learn from a co-worker, a professor of a undergraduate program or even your own student in your classroom, there is always more room to grow in teaching. The decision to continue my education by pursuing my bachelor’s degree in education was always something I knew I was going to do, I just didn't know what school would help me strive and continue to fulfill my goals. Initially, I began my education at Nassau Community College as Liberal Arts major. After two years of hard work, I received an Associates Degree and continued my education at Queens College. I chose Queens College education program because of the quality of the academic program and my interest in growing academically and socially as a teacher.
At the Queens College, I was provided with the opportunity to work in multiple elementary classrooms and student taught in a multicultural first and fifth grade classroom. Within my 4 months of student teaching I had many effective and satisfying experiences along with many challenging experiences that I was able to overcome and learn from. Not only was I able to work in a classroom setting, but also as an Assistant Manger at a swimming program. I provided swim instruction to children of various levels ranging in ages five to twelve in classes of up to ten children. Also, communicated with parents regarding their child’s development and preformed weekly assessments of their progress. I was able to continue my passion with children by contributing in volunteer work as a swim and basketball coach. Coached and taught 70 person swim team ranging in ages from 6 to 17 years old for 3 years. Also included creating swim team line ups and daily work out plans based on individual performance and progress. My experiences working with children have shaped me to teach with confidence, honor the personalities and learning styles in and out of the classroom. While I struggled some days and thrived the next, I was able to learn from every moment I was observing, teaching, planning, and reflecting. I only hope that through all of these experiences I can one day become the kind of teacher who inspired me to choose this as my life’s work.
Aside from my educational and student teaching experience, I developed special hobbies such as softball, basketball and swimming. Throughout high school and college, I consistently played basketball and softball. After finding my passion in teaching, these hobbies became apart of my past. However, I would highly enjoy coaching as an addition towards teaching!
